The Freshman

Via Kim...

LISA JACK

BARACK OBAMA: THE FRESHMAN
28 May - 29 Aug 2009

M+B is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition BARACK OBAMA: THE FRESHMAN, black and white photographs by Lisa Jack. First featured in Time Magazine’s 2008 “Person of the Year” Issue, which chose then President-elect Barack Obama for his “rare ability to . . . organize himself and others to anticipate change and translate it into opportunity,” these photographs offer a window back in time before the posters and before the campaign, when a 20-year-old young man was caught up in just such a change that Time Magazine would later describe. Lisa Jack, then a student of photography at Occidental College, sought a striking subject for a portrait project and was tipped off about a charismatic freshman named “Barry” Obama who would make an ideal subject. After the shoot, these images would remain locked away for the next 28 years, until a dare from a friend triggered Lisa Jack to seek them out. At first worried these images could be used against President Obama, Jack realized they were not incriminating of anything other than being young and self-conscious, and that they offered a unique glimpse into how the man who made history went from being “Barry” to Barack. This exhibition marks the first time these rare photographs have ever been printed and on display.

Barack Un-Cut!

Via Willy...

"In his bestselling autobiography, Dreams From My Father, President Obama introduces us to his high school friend, “Ray,” who, like him, is bi-racial. Who, also like him, is casting about to find his place in the world. But, who, unlike him, has a potty mouth that would make a sailor blush.

Best of all? When reading the audiobook version of his bio, Obama does impressions of Ray’s manner of speech. Swear words and all. It’s fucking awesome. And it’s a way of talking we probably won’t be hearing from him now that he’s POTUS."

“You know that guy ain’t shit. Sorry-ass motherfucker ain’t got nothing on me.” (MP3)

“This shit’s getting way too complicated for me.” (MP3)

“There are white folks, and then there are ignorant motherfuckers like you.” (MP3)

“You ain’t my bitch, nigga! Buy your own damn fries!” (MP3)

“Sure you can have my number, baby!” (MP3)

Why Minorites Are Scared of the Police

This is normally a happy go lucky blog about music, style and culture but I have to take a time out today to discuss something that no one seems to know about.

On January 1st of this year 22 year old Oscar Grant was shot...by a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Officer. His killing is being compared to a public execution as it was done in apparent cold blood (he was lying face down) in front of a large audience pleading the officers to leave the young man alone.

According to CNN:
The young men had been celebrating the new year at a popular waterfront tourist spot, The Embarcadero. They were heading home when police pulled them from the train car about 2 a.m.

Some of the young men were handcuffed, but not 22-year-old Oscar Grant. The video from the anonymous passenger shows Grant seated on the floor with his back against the wall.

Grant holds up his hands, appearing to plead with police. Burris said Tuesday that Grant was asking police not to use a Taser.

"He said to them, 'Don't Tase me; I have a 4-year-old daughter,' " Burris said.

The interaction on the video is not audible.

Seconds later, police put Grant face-down on the ground. Grant appears to struggle. One of the officers kneels on Grant as another officer stands, tugs at his gun, unholsters it and fires a shot into Grant's back.

Burris said the bullet went through Grant's back and then ricocheted off the floor and through his lungs.

Click here to see the video - taped by a passenger on a passing train. Warning it's pretty disturbing.

My question is why does no one seem to know about this horrible wrong doing? I guess the more important question is why are none of the major network's covering this story? The killing of a white college student would surely receive 12 straight hours of coverage followed by weeks of follow up --- since this was a 22 year old black man with a young child it is swept under the rug?

Most of the press I've seen is concerning how black people are rioting (its called a protest when white hippies do it) and how the officer is getting death threats (damn right he should be getting death threats!)

Damn.

We got a black president but this proves - as the crazy Kanye once said - "Racism still alive they just be concealing it".

Now that we have Obama as president, America feels all high and mighty with a general feeling "how can there be racism if we have a black president?"

OBAMA SAY SOMETHING PLEASE!!!

Sooner or Later

N.E.R.D.'s last album Seeing Sounds didn't quite get the press one would expect but it definitely was a worth while album. They recently released a topical video for their track "Sooner or Later" - definitely fire.

Do Chad and Pharell still have beef? Further - what percentage of earning do you think the 3rd guy from N.E.R.D. gets?

The Black Bond

"Daniel Craig is thrilled Barack Obama has triumphed in the U.S. presidential election - because he believes the African-American politician's victory means the world may be ready for a black James Bond.

The Quantum of Solace star, who received his fair share of criticism when he was named the first 'blonde Bond', believes the role of the secret agent could be played by actors of any race.

And Craig insists Obama's win indicates that audiences are ready for different ethnicities to be represented in the public eye.

He says, "After Barack Obama's victory I think we might have reached the moment for a coloured 007.

"I think the role could easily be played by a black actor, because the character created by Ian Fleming in the '50s has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated."

---

TIMEOUT!

First off - "coloured 007"? C'mon Craig don't let me hate you...

Second off - I was discussing this with my friend Jeff and he said "Fuck that - Bond is white. Would it be odd if they did a remake of Shaft and it was some white dude?"

Third off - Craig's statement has fueled an unbelievable amount of online "message boarding" --- the current top candidate consensus is Diddy. Please no.

So despite point 1 and 2 I'm going to suggest a choice for the first "Black Bond" in order to prevent point 3.

Without further ado I give you Bond, James Bond...

(don't mind the white hands)

Mumbai Attack

I was having difficulty understanding the severity of what was going on in Mumbai and how it was affecting the residents of Mumbai. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat.

A friend Sean passed this article on - by Prashant Agraw - a man who moved from NYC to Mumbai 6 years ago. Below is an excerpt:

"To understand the impact on the financial capital of India one needs to know the unique place the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Oberoi Complex (both the Oberoi Trident and the Oberoi) play in the fabric of the city's life, especially for its professionals. The Taj Mahal Hotel and the Oberoi Complex are not just the Four Seasons and Pierre of New York City. They are Mumbai's lifeline and blood.

But the hotels are much more than financial destinations; they are cultural centers. The best bookshop in Mumbai is in the Taj. Out of the 10 best restaurants in the city, half are in these two hotels. After a late night out, the 24 hour coffee shops of both hotels are filled with young people using them as late-night diners. Visit these same coffee shops in the day and you might see two families having a cup of tea discussing a matrimonial alliance. For a Mumbaiker, these hotels serve as a second home.

Every Indian is familiar with the Taj, its iconic red brick architecture façade serves as the backdrop for so many stories and Bollywood movies. So when Sonia Gandhi, the President of the ruling Congress Party, says that these are attacks on India's prestige, she means it.

If the attacks on the two hotels were not enough, the CST train terminal was hit. One out of every 10 commuters uses the CST (formerly known as the Victoria Terminus) daily. And after attacking the CST, the terrorists hit the Cama Hospital, a hospital for women and children. The last major target was a Jewish center. Mumbai has housed an Iraqi Jewish community for centuries. Not once have they been targeted. That has changed."
