Jazz, Jambalaya, and Banksy...

SB passed this on...

British street artist Banksy has painted several murals in New Orleans to mark the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Banksy said: "Three years after Katrina I wanted to make a statement about the state of the clean-up operation."

The rebuilt levee wall offers not just better protection for the city, but also "the best painting surface in the state of Louisiana", according to Banksy.

Bike gang homey...

So long story short - I went to see Paul Simon perform at BAM earlier this year and David Byrne was featured. After the show I am standing outside with my family and Byrne walks out the front door as if he is...not David Byrne. He unlocks his bike from a bike rack and bikes off in to the Brooklyn night. (This is actually not my story but it sounds better told 1st person - no?)

Becca passed this on to me after I told her my adopted story:

"David Byrne and the New York City Department of Transportation, in conjunction with New York art gallery PaceWildenstein, have unveiled nine unique bicycle racks designed by DB and installed in various locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. An avid bicyclist for almost 30 years, Byrne was invited to join the panel of jurors selected by the DOT to judge a design competition for outdoor and indoor bicycle racks. Inspired by the city's initiative, he submitted some original design ideas of his own named after specific locations and neighborhoods, which the DOT enthusiastically agreed to install for a period of 364 days."

Here you can read about the details of the competition, Byrne's concept behind the bike rack designs, as well as a map showing the locations of each rack.

Bulls vs Blazers

Former NBA player Kevin Duckworth died yesterday at the age of 44. Kevin Duckworth is best known for playing alongide Terry Porter, Clyde Drexler, Buck Williams and Jerome Kersey on two Portland Trailblazers, Western Conference championship teams (1990 and 1992). He averaged 11.8 points and 5.8 rebounds over 11 seasons in the NBA and was selected to the all star team twice. (I remember him best from Bulls versus Blazers.)

Sounds like we lost one of the good guys.

RIP Kevin Duckworth.

M-BAR

I recently had the pleasure of checking out Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson at Joe's Pub. The current sweetheart of the New York hipster music scene is being touted as the brightest up and coming song writer since...Conor Oberst. Besides having a name so long i need an acronym to remember it - he is half black - an oddity in his genre.

When i first got a hold of M-BAR's self titled album - (besides thinking - damn he sounds like bright eyes) - I thought this is what everyone is raving about? However, after a few listens - I can't stop listening. I have to admit - I am a fan of the depressingly slow song - I like a good cry.

Nonetheless, what is a "good songwriter"? Why are guys who play acoustic guitar and sing as if they are going to cry - often labeled "good songwriters"? This has to relate to Bob Dylan in some way - no?

Further, how does the "new great songwriter" (M-BAR) not ever sing about racial issues when its the first thing i notice about him?

Anyway - I still love the guys music. Not the most talented musician - so his live show was at times a bit "raw" but this was all balanced by how endearing he was on stage.

Visionaire

Danielle got really excited when i shouted her out in a previous post so she sent me this trying to stay in the lime light. She's pretty cool.

"The editors of the experimental fashion-art magazine Visionaire have rallied a dozen of their favorite talents, photographer Peter Lindbergh, artist-musician David Byrne, and filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar among them, to contribute images that Lacoste has now printed on polo shirts. They’re being sold as the magazine’s latest “issue,” 54 Sport—cleverly bundled in sets of three and placed inside a laminated-paper mini suitcase, alongside a book of all 12 images."

I Roc with Obama but I ain't no politician...

"Curious to see what Barack Obama was like before he got into politics?

This rare TV interview from 1995 will give you some insight. One thing is clear - the guy is consistent. He's been talking about post-racial, non-polarized politics for over a decade now. Obama must have been only 33 or 34 years old at the time, but he was already a thoughtful and eloquent conversationalist. His manner of speaking hasn't changed much over the past thirteen years. Having read Obama's book and heard many of those same stories become fodder in this election, I thought it was great to take a time machine back to 1995 and hear Obama expand upon them outside of a campaign setting.

One can see that Barack Obama was already starting to think about issues of poverty and race in a political context. He mentions the "race card", Rev. Wright, his absent father, and his white grandmother -- all issues that would become oh so relevant here in 2008."

Hipster 101

The always on point and always beautiful Danielle passed this one on...

David Byrne, lead singer of the Talking Heads and the godfather of hipster-dom, released his latest album (a collaboration with Brian Eno - the "Father of Ambient Music") on his website. The album will be available in a tangible form in the fall but you can stream and downoad the entire album here.

Further, go ahead and check out Byrne's website - specifically his web radio feed. The radio feed is always based around a specific theme (i.e. Scandinavian artists) and attempts to familiarize the listener with some of the better known songs as well as some oddities. The current web radio feed is titled "Africa is Hot" - songs from artists south of the Sahara.

Diaroogle.com (derived from the words google and...you know) is a search engine that locates public restrooms throughout the NYC area.
"It's for the discerning, on-the-go defecator who is brave enough to use a public bathroom, but still demands a hygienic and private bathroom experience. It is also a community authored database of New York toilets."

Simply type a cross street, zip code, or neighborhood into their search engine and poop away.

Sure to disappoint...

Talk about excited - the movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" is set to be released November 26, 2008. (Cormac McCarthy is not only the author of "No Country For Old Men" but is also Oprah recommended!)

"The Road is a 2006 novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic tale describing a journey taken by a father and his young son over a period of several months across a landscape blasted years before by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed civilization and, seemingly, most life on earth. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2006 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction."

The film stars Viggo Mortenson (gotta love Viggo) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (who?) as the father and son. John Hillcoat, best known for his 2005 critically acclaimed film The Proposition, directs. Guy Pearce also stars while Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, and Michael K. Williams (Wire Alert!) make appearances.

No trailer just yet but these screen shots are unreal!

From B-More to Hollywood

I am a big fan of the television show the Wire (as we all are). I've just finished season 4 (so don't spoil anything for me) and I'm ecstatic that season 5 is now on DVD. They have officially been moved to the top of my netflix queue.

I am also a big fan of 90210. I have fond memories of coming home from school and making myself a grilled cheese sandwich and watching re-runs on channel 11. I was ecstatic to find out there would be a new 90210 show (airing Tuesdays at 8PM - starting Sept 2) - i mean i would prefer more original re-runs but I'll take whatever i can get.

So what do those two shows have in common?

They both star the young Michael Lee!

DNA 11

DNA 11 is a company that makes "DNA Art" - you choose your color scheme and have custom art made from your DNA pattern. First saw this at the Moma Store.

You can have prints made of your DNA pattern, lips (kiss), and fingerprint. You choose your color pattern and size of print and then you are sent a kit to take your DNA sample in the comforts of your own home. Definitely some loot ($190 - $1200) and if you do want to purchase it buy it directly from the site rather than Moma - which is marked up.

You can even have a print made of up to four people's (i.e.) DNA.

How about that as the family portrait on top of your fireplace?

The Spanish Men's Basketball Olympic team (one of the teams considered a favorite to receive a medal) has proven to be ignorant pricks.

I actually had a kid at a bar do that to me one time and it was probably the most offended i had ever been - it took me several weeks to cool off. Imagine doing this in China?!!? And then saying people are too sensitive when they complain? Wow. Now das racist.

Stop rocking out! And do some political stuff!

Jon recently put together a piece for his magazine asking Barack Obama and John Mccain for a 10 song playlist. The article has some pretty amusing commentary from Girl Talk and Randy Newman (Randy Newman! - who knew he was such a cool guy?).

You can check out the aticle here.

Below are the two candidates lists:

BARACK OBAMA
1. Ready or Not - Fugees
2. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
3. I'm On Fire - Bruce Spingsteen
4. Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
5. Sinnerman - Nina Simone
6. Touch the Sky - Kanye West
7. You'd Be So Easy to Love - Frank Sinatra
8. Think - Aretha Franklin
9. City of Blinding Lights - U2
10. Yes We Can - will.i.am

JOHN McCAIN
1. Dancing Queen - ABBA
2. Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison
3. Take a Chance On Me - ABBA
4. If We Make It Through December - Merle Haggard
5. As Time Goes By - Dooley Wilson
6. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
7. What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
8. I've Got You Under My Skin - Frank Sinatra
9. Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
10. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - The Platters

Safe choices by both but two ABBA songs? Two?! McCain either used to do tons of nose candy or he is very very gay. There I said it.

"Real Talk"

When did people start to say "Real Talk"? Did it have anything to do with the rise in popularity of Girl Talk? I think I am going to start to say it and test it out.

For all of those who don't know what i am talking about:

"Real Talk" can be used in a sentence to replace a phrase such as "can we talk seriously now?"

i.e.

"Real Talk, i need to speak with you about the amount of cheesecake you've been eating lately."

or

"I just got that hummus with the jalapeno - that ish is real talk."

*Side note - you can "pay what you want" for Girl Talks new album at his myspace site!

P*ssy Monster

As I live with Jon - I got to go to see Lil Wayne a few months ago at the Beacon. At that specific point in time i had lost faith in the live hip hop concert. The Roots had lost their "wow" factor, Talib Kweli sounded like he smoked too many ciggaretes (also looked like he hated the audience - aka white people), Wu-Tang complained about the sound guy the whole time, I was distracted by a B&T couple literally having sex at Kanye (i guess that wasn't a bad show)...the list went on.

You can probably guess - Lil Wayne put on the best show i had seen in forever. This is all with high expectations. Well he killed it and brought down the house with this song "Pussy Monster". I was waiting for it to come out on the Carter 3 but it didn't!

As I am friends with Jon, today he sends me an email titled "New Wayne".

Bloomberg joins the SQUADRON!

Mayor Michel R. Bloomberg today endorsed Daniel Squadron in the Democratic Primary for the 25th Senate District in Manhattan and Brooklyn, citing Daniel's record in public service and his plans to bring overdue change to Albany.

"We'll never get reform in Albany if we don't send reformers there, and Daniel Squadron's independent voice is exactly what New York City needs in our State Capitol," Mayor Bloomberg said. "As Mayor, I have made turning around the City's schools and investing in our infrastructure among my top priorities because it's hopeless to build for our future without either. By helping move hundreds of millions of dollars out of our school bureaucracies and into City classrooms, and by helping us raise nearly three billion dollars for transit infrastructure, Daniel Squadron's record getting things done for New Yorkers is already more impressive than many lifelong legislators. Daniel Squadron is independent, hard-working, and smart -- three things I always look for when I go into the voting booth. I am proud to endorse Daniel Squadron for State Senate, and strongly encourage Democrats in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to vote for him in September."

"Mayor Bloomberg and I share a belief in taking on big challenges and fighting for what we believe is right -- and we both know that there is no bigger challenge than reforming Albany nor any fight that could be more right," said Squadron. "I am honored that the mayor is supporting this race for reform and results. I continue to believe that with hard work, independence, and a progressive vision, our state legislature has incredible potential to deliver real results for our neighborhoods, our city and our state."

This is the third major endorsement Squadron has received in the last two days, joining Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and ACORN, who endorsed Squadron on Monday.

Daniel Squadron has spent his life in New York and his career in public service: as a top aide to U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and co-author with Senator Schumer, of Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class Majority One Family at a Time; as Communications Director on the campaign to pass the Transportation Bond Act and provide hundreds of millions of dollars for our subways and buses; and working for our public school system to move money from the bureaucracy to the classroom.

As State Senator, Squadron has vowed to fight every day to change a culture in Albany – on both sides of the aisle – that too often elevates self-preservation over bold solutions; he will be a strong advocate for an overhaul of our campaign finance system, rules reform that creates a functioning legislature, non-partisan redistricting, and reasonable term limits so elective office is no longer a lifetime entitlement.

Squadron has also been endorsed by Senator Chuck Schumer, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, the progressive Working Families Party, ACORN, the Downtown Independent Democrats, UAW Region 9A, CWA District 1, the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council and UNITE HERE! Local 23-25.

Polaroids: Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe was THE photographer of the NYC scene until he was killed by the AIDS virus. (You can think of him as Andy Warhol with a camera) He captures the raw uncovered aspects of Chelsea and the Lower East Side before they were hangouts for the Bridge and Tunnel crowd. Much of his work covers the gay S&M scene so it is not necessarily for the right win conservatives out there.

Currently at the Whitney Museum there is an exhibit entitled "Polaroids: Mapplethorpe". Here is a blurb from their website:

"This special exhibition traces Robert Mapplethorpe's use of instant photography from 1970 to 1975. Created in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, the show brings together one hundred objects, many never exhibited before. Included are self-portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and portraits of lovers and friends including Patti Smith, Sam Wagstaff, and Marianne Faithfull. Many of these small, intimate photographs convey tenderness and vulnerability. Others depict a toughness and immediacy that would give way in later years to more classical form. Unlike the highly crafted images Mapplethorpe staged in the studio and became famous for, these disarming pictures are marked by spontaneity and invention. Together, they offer insight into the artist's creative development and reveal his pure delight in seeing at a formative time in his career. The show will be accompanied by a book that places this early work in the context of his life-long artistic production."

Maybe it was the fact that she has Kanye, John Legend, Cee-Lo and Kardinal (Kardinal!!!) featured on her album.

THE C.R.E.A.M. TEAM

Dope new Nike commercial featuring Marvin Gaye singing his version of he National Anthem from he 1983 All-Star game in LA.

I'm a sucker - I always get excited about "Team USA" - I don't know why. This commercial made me realize why i care so much - one word - NIKE. I somehow over all this time forgot that he phrase "Dream Team" was initially coined by Nike (remember the issues with the original dream team and how they had the US flags covering the nike swoosh on the podiums during the award ceremony?).

Nevertheless, Nike always is on point with their ad campaigns - this one is no different. I get goose bumps watching this (and the hand claps!).

USA! USA! USA!
